Circle Round the Square is a holistic, arts-based, summer enrichment program designed to elevate the body, mind and spirit of the at-risk Appalachian youth and families it serves. Located in southeast Ohio, Circle provides arts access for students in the impoverished Nelsonville-York City School District (NYCSD) where 78% are eligible for free and reduced lunch, and where arts curriculum has never, in its history, been offered grades K-8. Since its launch in 2005, Circle’s free-of-charge, 5-week program has grown in scope and measurable outcomes. The intensive summer rotation model delivers over 106 hours of high quality arts learning, 37 of which are measured to ODE Visual Arts standards. Leadership Program provides Circle high school seniors aging out of the program, evidence-based leadership training and a stipend to work in the summer program. Fall 2016, Circle will expand to offer an additional 112 after-school program hours to 10 students who will continue on after summer.
