Henslow’s Sparrow
Ammodramus henslowii
Printed on ruby red o-gami
This sparrow, named in honor of John Stevens Henslow, a botanist and mentor to Charles Darwin, is a member of the Passerellidae family of birds, whose defining characteristics are their conical beaks, seed-heavy diet, and brown and gray colors. However, Henslow’s Sparrow differs slightly from this classification, having an olive face and neck, and a white throat. These birds forage on the ground, eating seeds and tiny insects. They are currently threatened by habitat loss and devegetation.
