Appalachian Grizzled Skipper
Pyrgus Wyandot
Printed on Walnut o-gami paper
The Southern Grizzled Skipper is a small, brown, gray, and white butterfly native to the Appalachian highlands. It is known for its characteristic checkered wing pattern, and its unusual flight pattern – this butterfly rarely flies higher than three feet from the ground, and does so in quick, jerky movements. All species of skipper prefer open, sparsely vegetated areas. A very large population of Appalachian Grizzled Skipper was recently discovered to inhabit a stretch of Wayne National Forest.
