Butternut

Juglans cinerea

Printed on handmade hemp paper

J. Cinerea is a deciduous, slow fruiting tree that grows on stream banks and in well-drained soils in the northeastern and central United States. It produces clusters of 4-6 large nuts, and grows well in close proximity with many hardwood tree species, including white oak, red oak, sugar maple, black cherry, beech, hickory, and poplar. Butternut has been processed into oil by Native Americans for centuries, and its soft wood is used to make fine furniture. Butternut’s husks also contain a natural yellow-orange dye that has been used in homespun textile production. These effects are magnified by its relatively long life cycle: it takes the Green Salamander as long as 7-8 years to reach reproductive maturity.  These prints are numbered and signed by the artist. There are only 4 prints left. Once those are gone there will be no more available.
