Local to the Little Muskingum River, The Eastern Hellbender is a large aquatic salamander native to the eastern and central U.S. It is the only extant member of the genus Cryptobranchus. Hellbenders have both working lungs and gills, although it primarily absorbs oxygen from the water through capillaries on its side frills.
