The Redside Dace is a species of tiny ray-finned fish found in the Ohio River. As a minnow, its diet makes it unique: this fish leaps out of the water and feeds on flying insects. This behavior makes the Redside Dace a key component of its ecosystem, since it transfers nutrients from terrestrial to aquatic environments. Ecologists interpret the presence of this fish as an indicator of good ecosystem health, since it is so sensitive to environmental change and degradation.
