This freshwater fish is prevalent throughout North America, from Ontario to the Gulf of Mexico, and from southern Florida to Texas. The Chubsucker prefers, warm, still, clear water. It is currently declining in population in Ohio, Arkansas, and Missouri, due to several factors, including increased sedimentation from industry, and the introduction of invasive species. It is also currently subject to habitat destruction from coal ash spills
